Pieces of Her

"This series formed as I researched the symbolic statements encoded within figural representation and focused on young women’s relationships with body and image. Portraiture allows me to study and share experiences with the women I encounter. I present what I find beautiful or important about them and express my own views on human nature. To make the series I standardized their representation, repeating not just technique, but choices over personal ornamentation and expression. By removing some of each model’s normal control over her appearance I have selectively altered layers of voluntary cultural masking, effectively deconstructing their normal personas. These controls reconstruct identity, but are limited by the materials and objects each model brings to the studio as well as her unique form and character. These women are being presented as “Pieces of Her,” and so personify parts of female identity in order to broaden an understanding of women and appearance. Their portraits are photographic, but are also symbolic texts in which the model is depicted as an individual, a “contemporary woman,” and a reflection of my self." Dustin Angell
